Engineer for Amur Tigers with the Minnesota Zoo's ZOOMS Design Challenge! (Grades 3-8)
DON’T MISS OUT ON THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY TO ENGAGE YOUR
STUDENTS IN ZOO-BASED STEM!
The ZOOMS design challenge offers students a chance to use the engineering design process to develop a solution to a ‘real’ problem faced by zookeepers and staff at the Minnesota Zoo. From designing an animal enrichment to renovating a zoo exhibit, the problem will challenge 3rd-8th grade students to use their science and math knowledge, creativity, problem solving, and research skills in order to solve the problem and present a solution. Teachers receive resources and support from the zoo to ensure a meaningful experience for all. Selected students will be invited to showcase their design challenge solutions in the ZOOMS Design Exhibition in March 2018 at the Minnesota Zoo for a chance to win a backstage pass experience with our animals! FREE for all teachers and students to participate!
2017-2018 DESIGN CHALLENGES
Level 1(3rd-5th grade) and Level 2 (6-8th grade) challenges available for each
AMUR TIGER ENRICHMENT DESIGN
Design a durable and engaging enrichment device to encourage the natural behaviors of the Minnesota Zoo’s three Amur Tiger's: Putin, Patricie, and Sundari. (Now 4 tigers with the recent addition of a new female tiger cub on April 26!)
TIGER BASECAMP EXHIBIT REDESIGN
Even with two tiger exhibits to choose from, keepers are limited in offering access to the Tiger Basecamp exhibit to all three tigers because of modifications needed to be made in the exhibit to safely accommodate and enrich the diverse needs of each tiger while also balancing visitor and keeper needs.
**A free Design Challenge Teacher Workshop September 26th 9 am-3 pm to help support implementing the challenge into your classroom. Workshop will include hands on activities, tiger zoo keeper talk, Minnesota Zoo Tiger conservation speaker, observe a tiger enrichment animal behavior session, and more!
