Ubah Medical Academy, a 9-12 charter school for East African immigrants in Hopkins recently used the getSTEM portal to receive a turtle and tank for one of their classrooms.  The turtle, tank, and supplies were posted as an OFFER by Christine Turner of getSTEM sponsor Honeywell, because it was her son’s pet and he is heading off to college this fall.  Christine thought that the turtle would be a fantastic addition to a science classroom, and she was right! 

She was contacted by Sam Northey, a teacher at Ubah, and she delivered the turtle and the accompanying supplies to the school where he was waiting with two very excited students.  According to Sam, “the turtle has taken residence in the back of my room and it has been adopted by many of the students already!” 

This simple, easy exchange will allow students at Ubah Medical Academy to observe and interact with a live subject every day; increasing their interest in science and enhancing their learning experience.  getSTEM’s straightforward “Just ask…Just offer” formula allows connections like this one to be made every day!
