Space Camp trip
If you saw the ABC movie "A Smile As Big As The Moon" on Sunday, you saw how NASA Space Camp can provide real life skills and challenges for students that ignite their passion for learning. http://abc.tv/xEBmIr Up to 26 middle school students from the Anoka-Hennepin school district will be traveling to Huntsville Alabama for Space Camp and other learning activities in Chicago and St Louis from February 16th through 20th. The trip costs each of the students $610. I attended NASA Teacher @ Space Academy & Advanced Space Academy and that professional development experience changed the way I teach forever. Several of my students this year and last year have attended Space Camp on previous trips and it has provided for some very interesting interactions between myself and my students. I hope to return to Space Camp as a chaperone for the students next year. I want to challenge local businesses to help support the students from Anoka-Hennepin to attend this inspirational and life changing event. Paul Keeney Oak View Middle School

Hoping for "THE WORKS"
I am a third grade teacher at Afton-Lakeland Elementary School. I team teach 48 wonderful, curious, scientific students who unfortunately don't have financial stability at home. For the past 5 years, I have had the wonderful opportunity to organize, "The Works" Museum, to come to our school and conduct two classes that are directly related to our LEGO Structures Unit. Class one is called Pasta Bridges and Class Two is called Skyscrapers. This is a day filled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students are totally engaged in these hour long classes and learn so much. I am so sad because this year we are faced with a group of students who do not have the finances to fund this experience. I do not want to loose this opportunity for these students, but know that I can not ask their families for dollars to pay for it. I am asking for a sponsor who would be interested in adopting my class for this year so that we can engage in this fabulous day of STEM! Please check out The Works website and consider helping my class with this project. This experience costs around $15.00/student. Approximately $720.00 total.

Binders for junior high kids
At my junior high school we talk every year with the kids about the importance of staying organized. Especially for 7th graders coming into junior high for the first time and balancing six classes when they're used to having one elementary classroom, keeping the papers and assignments organized and clear is often what makes the difference between a kid being successful or failing multiple classes. For this purpose, most of the kids have big zipper binders -- a huge 3-ring binder with fabric that zips around it and multiple pockets to organize papers and keep pencils and a calculator. This year I've been noticing that it's the kids who come from poor households who don't have these, and a little investigating uncovers that it's because they cost $18 each. Any donations of something like this would be appreciated. If you go to Amazon and search "Case-It zipper binder" it shows what I'm talking about. Thank you!

Introduce students to jobs related to the engineering, manufacturing, and technology career clusters
The Forest Lake Area Learning Center is focusing on learning about careers this year and I am looking for your help. We are seeking volunteers to come to our school for 30 - 45 minute sessions and speak about their career field. We can be pretty flexible with dates and times during the school day and can provide computers and projectors if you want to show a video or power point presentation. An alternate option is for us to bring groups of students to your business for a tour and to see your work in action. The overall goal is to expose students to many different careers and hopefully get them interested and excited about jobs during the process. Many of our students are hands on learners. It would be ideal, but not necessary, to incorporate some sort of an interactive experience (ex. demonstrations, looking at or trying tools, role plays, etc.). We are focusing on the engineering, manufacturing, and technology career clusters during the months of January and February and I am looking for additional speakers, activities, and/or field trips.
