getSTEM success stories not only celebrate accomplishments in the classroom, but they have far-reaching impact as well.  The story of the little girl named Caiah (learn more ) is a great example of how one act of generosity fueled another.   Caiah was diagnosed with leukemia last December and through the kindness of MN Computers for Schools, a laptop was donated so she could continue schoolwork at home while receiving treatments.  Ralph Awad, Director of Hosting Services at VISI (Vector Internet Services) learned about Caiah and was deeply touched by her story.  Having two little girls of his own, he could empathize with what her family might be going through and wanted to do what he could to lessen the family’s stress. 

Since his occupation provided expertise in internet connectivity, Ralph got in touch with Caiah’s teacher, Liz Dayton, to see how VISI might help Caiah’s family.   Ralph was able to come up with a plan that helped cover the cost for internet service for the better part of a year.  He is also spearheading initiatives where VISI employees might be able to provide additional support for the family in the future.   Ralph’s involvement is another outstanding example of how the public and private sectors can work together to truly make a difference.
